Dental Crown

A dental crown, also known as a cap, is a type of restoration that is placed over a tooth or attaches to a dental implant.

It restores the appearance, shape and size, strength of decayed or broken teeth. It helps to cover and protect the tooth in a similar way that a helmet protects your head.

Crowns reinforce decayed or cracked teeth, enabling them to work typically once more. When made from high-tech porcelains, crowns are almost the same as natural teeth.

They can even be intended to enhance a tooth’s original appearance.

There are different materials other than porcelain that can use to make dental crowns, depending on the qualities and characteristics needed.

For sturdiness, cast gold can’t be beaten. Be that as it may, this isn’t generally the most aesthetic decision — particularly towards the front of the mouth.

Other materials include porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns (PFM), which have metal inside for quality and porcelain outside for an increasingly natural appearance, and all-porcelain crowns with zirconia, representing the most grounded ceramic.

Why you need a Dental Crown

You may need to consider a dental crown if you find yourself in the following situations:

To cover discoloured or worn teeth

In the event that you feel that your teeth are becoming increasingly transparent or darker in shading, explain your concerns to your dentist so they can determine the reasons why this is occurring.

Once it is confirmed that there are no underlying issues causing the discolouration, your dentist may feel a good professional clean or a whitening treatment will service, or he may feel the long-term treatment requires a crown.

Should your dentist prescribe a crown, this crown will be made to match the natural shape and quality of your existing tooth in a ceramic material.

Replacement of a large filling

On the off chance that your teeth are heavily filled, they might be in danger of breaking or of having the filling become dislodged.

Every time a dentist replaces a filling more of the tooth structure is lost and the tooth is at risk of becoming weaker.

Your dentist may suggest that a crown is placed before the filling turns out to be excessively large and remaining tooth structure is not enough to even think about supporting a crown.

After Root Canal Treatment

Root canal filled teeth are inclined to break and crack, because of the nature of root canal treatment and hollowing out of the tooth in the process.

Dentists highly prescribe crowning most root canal filled teeth to shield them from breaks and further bacterial infections.

These teeth will often darken over time, some even turn black, a crown will cover this discolouration and ensure the tooth still looks attractive.

Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is a ceramic structure, that literally bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth.

A ceramic tooth is bonded in between two or more porcelain crowns on either side of the missing tooth that serve as anchors.

The anchor teeth are called abutment teeth and are shaped to accommodate the crowns, and then a bridge is fused securely over these teeth.

These teeth can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. A bridge is ideal for those people wanting to avoid dentures to replace missing teeth.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are very thin pieces of tooth coloured composite resin or porcelain that is bonded to the front surface of your natural tooth, they are a great way to disguise a number of aesthetic and physical issues.

They are very similar to a dental crown but generally only cover the front, more visible, surface of the tooth.

Veneers are used to cover discoloured teeth that are resistant to other forms of teeth whitening, teeth that are chipped, slightly crooked or even to close small gaps between teeth.

Veneers can be made from the same white tooth coloured material we use for fillings (composite resin); this is the cheaper option but unfortunately will discolour over a period of time and will need to be replaced in years to come.

The more resilient option is to use porcelain veneers. These veneers are manufactured in a dental lab and do not stain or discolour.

Our dentist North Lakes will discuss these options with you and help you decide which is the better choice for your situation.
