Toothache

Toothache Management North Lakes and Mango Hill

One of the most common dental emergencies is toothache or dental pain.

When you have a toothache, your daily activities are affected. Eating can be difficult, causing you to lose your appetite and experience headaches.

Over-the-counter drugs offer quick relief, but relief that won’t last for long.

After a couple of hours, you’re stuck with a toothache again. What you really need is a lasting and effective solution.

Passion Family Dental North Lakes offers dental solutions to make sure your toothache doesn’t come again. Visit your North Lakes dentist today!

Causes of Toothache

1) Trauma

When you receive a strong blow to your face, the pain doesn’t always go away quickly. Sometimes, the pain stays, and can even be caused by simply breathing in cold air.

Trauma to the tooth can cause cracks which can continue into the roots, these cracks can develop into cavities or worse.

2) Poor dental hygiene and decay

One of the main causes of toothache or dental pain is tooth decay. When you eat and then fail to brush your teeth soon after, food particles are left in between your teeth, along the gums, and on the tongue.

These food particles, if not removed, will be broken down by the bacteria present in the mouth. The broken-down food particles, along with the bacteria and saliva, will develop into plaque.

The plaque will attach to the teeth and slowly cause your tooth to decay. If left untreated, the decay will progress and eventually start to affect the nerve of the tooth.

Once the decay reaches the nerve, the tooth will become even more painful and the tooth may become infected. This then often progresses to a dental abscess, something we all wish to avoid!

3) Periodontal disease

In Periodontal Disease, the bacteria in the mouth attack and irritate the gums, causing them to recede, exposing the softer and more sensitive dentine.

When the gums recede, the sensitive parts of the teeth are exposed, resulting in sensitivity towards extremely hot, cold, or sweet foods and beverages.

If your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, this may be an early sign of Periodontal Disease.

Often, we stop brushing when we see this blood, but we really need to do the opposite – brush more (don’t forget to floss)!

If bleeding continues it is definitely time to see your dentist before the condition worsens.

4) Tooth eruption

We all know that babies can be a little upset and uncomfortable as their baby teeth erupt. The same can be true as our adult teeth come through.

Children’s adult teeth erupt between 6 to 13 years of age as they develop their permanent teeth and lose the baby ones. When one reaches 17 to 25 years old the third molars or the “wisdom teeth”, erupt.

Try to keep the gums nice and clean as wisdom teeth start to come through, often pain and discomfort is caused by food getting stuck in that difficult to reach area.

First Aid for Toothache

In the case of a toothache or dental pain, here’s what you can do:

  • Make sure there is no food debris stuck in the mouth. To remove the food debris, brush your teeth and floss gently, especially in the affected area.
  • If there is swelling, apply a cold compress.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers, but do not give aspirin to those below 18 years old. Never put aspirin directly on your aching tooth or the gums surrounding it.
  • Visit your North Lakes dentist immediately.
