How to Manage Dental Problems While Staying at Home During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Many of us are now helping to protect our loved ones and are self-isolating. We have all been asked only to leave our homes to do essential shopping, attend doctors’ appointments and to exercise.
Due to the aerosols created when dentists are treating patients, dentists are now basically only permitted to do simple extractions and write prescriptions.
At Passion Family Dental North Lakes, we believe in providing only the best care for our patients, so these restrictions have given us no choice other than to close our doors temporarily.
This in no way means that we are not here to help our patients; we will just be offering help and advice from our homes.
Just because we can’t do basic dental treatment doesn’t mean that we can’t help you!
Sadly, many dental practices have been forced to make this same decision and have closed their practice. This potentially leaves a lot of people having to self-manage their dental care.
Dr Sam is helping our patients by providing his thoughts on how to cope with common dental problems. As you can imagine, this is quite an extensive list so we will be sharing this information over a few different posts.

What should I do if my teeth suddenly hurt?
If you only have sensitivity and there is no obvious spontaneous lingering pain (that is the pain only lasts a few moments and doesn’t linger for hours), it could be from a gum problem such as gum recession or the start of a gum infection.
You can try to reduce or avoid the causes of sensitivity, depending if it’s from cold, hot, sweet, sour or chewing teeth. Maintain a high standard of oral hygiene, make sure you continue brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day.
Possibly try using a sensitive toothpaste – this toothpaste works its best when applied directly to the sensitive area’s and just left to do its job, don’t rinse it off.
If you are having acute significant lingering pain due to infection, pain that wakes you up at night and stops you sleeping, you can take painkillers or antibiotics. (If possible, we could prescribe you antibiotic so that you could take script to the chemist). Contact us via email or Facebook Messenger.

What should I do if I break a tooth or I have filling come out?
Aside from normal thorough brushing and flossing, you can rinse the area with warm salty water to help keep the cavity clean after eating. Avoid chewing hard foods on the broken area as you don’t want more to break away.
In case of sensitivity, you could try to use a sensitive toothpaste, apply a pea-sized amount directly on to the area. What should I do if my gum bleeds?
Make sure to use a soft toothbrush and that you brush your teeth at least twice day, morning and night, for at least two minutes.
Try to use dental floss or interdental brushes (Piksters) to clean in between the teeth after meals. If necessary, you can gargle with warm salty water. After the pandemic, you need to book in for a full checkup and thorough scale and clean appointment.
What about pregnant women with bleeding gums?
The accumulation of bacteria will make the disease more serious in pregnant ladies. If you suffer from Morning Sickness make sure you at least rinse your mouth afterwards to keep the acid levels in your mouth to a minimum.
