Top 4 Amazing Benefits of Brushing & Flossing
Brushing and flossing are important parts of your daily routine.
Proper brushing and flossing techniques as part of your daily oral care routine are the essential components in the fight to keep your teeth plaque-free – and in protecting your teeth and gums for a lifetime.
#1 Whiter Teeth and Brighter Smile!
Everyday plaque build-up leads to tartar and stains.
Brushing and flossing can remove plaque before it hardens into tartar!
Brushing correctly and regularly keeps your smile healthy and bright!
#2 Fresh Breath!
No one loves bad breath (halitosis)!
Oral bacteria can produce an odour that is embarrassing and unhealthy.
Brushing and flossing can prevent the bacteria that cause halitosis and tooth decay!
#3 Healthy, Firm Gums!
Brushing the area where your teeth and gums meet is an essential part of correct oral hygiene.
Flossing cleans between the teeth and below the surfaces of gums.
Unhealthy gums can cause gum disease along with severe health issues in your mouth and body.
#4 Save Money!
Proper dental care saves money.
Good dental habits can help prevent problems that will require extra visits to the dentist.
With proper at-home care, you reduce the cost of dental treatments!
Brush your teeth two times a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush. In order to easily reach all areas of the mouth, use a toothbrush with a smaller head.
Change your toothbrush once every three months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do an excellent job of cleaning your teeth. Make sure to use fluoride toothpaste.
How to brush your teeth properly
- Tilt your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums
- Place the toothbrush partly on your teeth and partly on your gums
- Move in gentle circular motions where possible
- Tilt the brush vertically and make several gentle strokes to clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth
- Remember to brush all the surfaces of the teeth
- Brushing all surfaces correctly should take approximately two minutes
Yes! Brushing your teeth is just one of the few important steps of a complete oral care routine. Do not forget to:
- Try to floss your teeth every day – bacteria that causes tooth decay remains between the teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. Flossing helps remove plaque and food debris from between the teeth and along the gumline.
- Maintain a balanced diet that limits sugary beverages and snacks.
- See your North Lakes dentist regularly for prevention and treatment of oral disease.
Flossing should be a part of your daily routine. While brushing can help eliminate the bacteria on some surfaces of your teeth, some areas will be missed if you don’t floss.
Remaining bacteria causes gum disease and decay, and when it combines with your saliva and food, it creates plaque, a transparent, colourless, sticky film that adheres to your teeth.
To receive maximum benefits from flossing, use the following proper technique:
- Start with about 30 centimeters of floss and wind most of the floss around each middle finger. Leave up to about five centimeters of floss to work with.
- Hold the floss tautly between your thumbs and index fingers. Slide it gently up-and-down between your teeth. Try to avoid using a sawing action.
- Curve the floss around the base of each tooth gently, making sure you go under the gumline. Never snap or force the floss, as this may cut or bruise fragile gum tissues.
- Use a new section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.
- Use the same up-and-down motion to bring the floss up and away from the teeth.
Brushing and flossing keep your smile beautiful, save money, and can even save your life! Experience fresh breath, healthy gums, and stronger teeth!
